Penha Longa - 6918 yards par 72
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, this is one of the best courses in Portugal. Twice host to the Portuguese Open it is located in beautiful countryside in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains. It wanders through pine forest, rocks and old monastery ruins giving it a distinctive feel. There are plenty of hazards to watch out for and will test all departments of the game. A quality course that deserves it reputation.

 

Estoril Golf Club - 5762 yards par 69
One of Portugal's oldest courses that has a great reputation and it lives up to it. Lined with pine trees with well kept fairways it is a relatively short course that puts emphasis on accuracy. Set in fairly uneven terrain it uses the natural contours to create a course that can be considered as target golf. A good course always in good condition.

Lisbon Sports Club - 5806 yards par 69
The oldest course in the area dating back to 1922. Located in a superb position north of Lisbon it offers a good test of golf. Making good use of water hazards and some tight fairways this is no easy course. Has some elevated greens which can cause problems if not played the correct way, especially the 7th, it is a good test of golf.

Quinta da Marinha - 6615 yards par 71
A Robert Trent Jones design that was totally refurbished in early 2000. It was host to the 2001 Estoril Open showing the quality of the course. Fairways are wide with several ponds that were increased to lake size during the refurbishment. This width is made up by the toughness of the approaches to small heavily bunkered greens. A reputation for being in good condition and with superb views this is a course that offers everything for the golfer.

Aroeira I - 6750 yards par 72
A course with a deservedly good reputation. Host to the Portuguese Open on two occasions this Frank Pennick design is very impressive winding it's way through dense pine forest. Ranked as one of the best in Europe it is built on slightly undulating terrain and offers everything that a course should. To score well both length and accuracy is required with the greens well protected and water in play on a few holes. A definite must if playing in the area.


Quinta da Beloura - 6399 yards par 73
Opened in 1994 this is a fairly flat course with water being the prominent feature. An American style course that is situated in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains it is easy walking and a good design. Not as tough as a lot of the courses in the area, it uses water to great effect with lakes and streams. Well maintained with some good views, it offers good golf and a tough finish.

Belas - 7018 yards par 72
Rated as one of the best new courses in Portugal. Designed by Rocky Roquemore and opened in 1998 it is situated in the Sintra Hills and is gaining a great reputation. It has a heathland feel to it with the fairways bordered by scrub and very few trees. Built over rolling terrain it is extremely well kept and has very well guarded greens. Bunkers come into play on most of the holes as does a little bit of water. Well worth playing.

Montado - 6725 yards par 72
Surrounded by Muscatel vineyards and cork trees, this relatively flat course is a good test of golf. Water is the primary hazard and has been used to great effect throughout the design. Suitable for golfers of all levels it is enjoyable and easy walking. Provide that the H2O is avoided it is possible to put a good score together and makes for enjoyable golf.

Aroeira II - 6980 yards par 72
A very impressive Donald Steel design opened in April 2000. A mixture of the Aroeira 1 and American design with treelined fairways although not as tight and with more water in play especially on the back nine. The fairways and greens are nicely contoured and always in great condition. This is a course that will be equal to Aroeira 1 in time and combined gives two great courses.

 

Quinta do Peru - 6645 yards par 72
This course is one of the most popular in the area and also one of the best. A Rocky Roquemore design it goes through pine and cork tree forests in a unspoilt setting. Offering an interesting layout that combines treelined fairways and water hazards to great effect it is a great challenge for all golfers. Add a reputation for being maintained in excellent condition and you have a course that is a must play when visiting the Lisbon area.

Troia - 6931 yards par 72
Rated as the hardest course in Portugal. This Trent Jones links design has small greens and tight fairways and gives a unique experience. Access is only available to this scheduled spot with a short ferry ride, but it is worth it. The design is superb and has been rated at number 2 in Portugal. Has undergone recent improvements with new ownership and is now playing to its potential. The clubhouse has been improved and combined with the views it is a golfing paradise and should not be missed.

Golden Eagle - 6597 yards par 72
Another Rocky Roquemore design that is rated very highly. A private club that has opened it's doors to visitors and has uncovered a hidden gem. Set in tranquil dense forest it puts a premium on accuracy with bunkers and water well positioned. Has been improved greatly over the past few years under new ownership it now presents itself in great condition and a wonderful golfing experience.

Praia d'el Rey - 7114 yards par 72
A links course that has gained a reputation as being one of the best in Portugal. Offering some spectacular holes running along the Atlantic ocean, with undulating fairways, deep bunkers and natural sand hazards. The front nine is more treelined surrounded by pine forest and then the course sweeps down to the sea for some real links golf. A spectacular course.
