The Nicklaus Course
Opened for play in 1988 The Nicklaus Signature Golf Course is amongst the finest golf courses in Europe and certainly one of the most famous. The course was also the first European course personally designed by Jack Nicklaus. The course opended to rave reviews with Nicklaus himself being quoted "I knew it was going to be good but not this good". It was certainly good enough to host the Benson & Hedges International Open for six years from 1990 until 1995 with Olazabal, Langer and Ballesteros amongst the winners.
The Kernow Course
Opened in 1976 The Old Course, as it was then called, quickly became a must play course and by 1979 was included amongst the elite by its inclusion on the European Tour with the hosting of the Benson & Hedges International Open. This was followed by two further tournaments as it played host to the Tournament Players Championship, which included a win for Bernhard Langer in 1983. Entirely renovated as part of St Mellion’s extensive 2008 redevelopment, the Kernow Course has developed into a very popular golf course with Members & Visitors alike and a perfect foil for the world class Nicklaus Course. With it's wide fairways and big greens the course has gained a popular following and in a recent survey was included in the Top 5 "2nd Courses" in the UK’s best 36-hole golf courses.
Offering four-star accommodation, including luxury hotel rooms, detached cottages and self-catering facilities, the resort is set in peaceful green surroundings at St Mellion near Plymouth. St Mellion now boasts 80 comfortable guest rooms thanks to a £20 million refurbishment in 2010. The 80 spacious air-conditioned en-suite bedrooms are decorated in a fine contemporary manner, and are fitted with excellent modern amenities to ensure a comfortable stay. For large groups and families, St Mellion also has the Fairway Lodges, which range from one to five bedrooms, and are surrounded by the resort's golf courses. The lodges are within easy reach of the clubhouse, and guests can eat at the Brasserie if the exertion of cooking is too much after a day on the course. Every house is spacious, and the expansive living area provides the warmth and style that are perfect for a sociable golf break. The Leisure Club includes a 25-metre swimming pool, leisure pool, sauna, steam room and spa pool, while racquet sport enthusiasts can also use the tennis and squash courts.
